Breast Lift vs Breast Augmentation: What Is the Difference?

Table Of Content
If you have been researching breast surgery in Pune, you have almost certainly come across both terms and wondered whether they refer to the same thing. They do not. Confusing the two is one of the most common reasons patients arrive at consultation expecting one outcome but needing another entirely. This article is for women in Pune who want a clear, medically honest answer to that question before booking a consultation.
Written from my perspective as a board-certified plastic surgeon (MCh) at Dr. DC Plastic Surgery Centre, this guide covers exactly what each procedure does, who is a suitable candidate, how recovery looks week by week, realistic costs in Pune, and how to decide which option fits your situation.
What Is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that reshapes and repositions the breast by removing excess, stretched skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. The nipple-areolar complex is repositioned to a higher, more forward-facing position on the chest. Importantly, a breast lift does not add meaningful volume. If you are satisfied with your breast size but want them to sit higher and feel firmer, a lift is the right conversation.
Think of it this way: the problem a lift solves is one of position and skin quality, not size.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?
The key assessment during consultation is the degree of ptosis (the medical term for sagging). I evaluate where your nipple sits relative to the inframammary fold, which is the natural crease beneath your breast. If your nipple falls at or below that fold, you have a meaningful degree of ptosis that augmentation alone cannot correct.
Women who typically benefit from a breast lift include:
- Women who have completed breastfeeding and notice deflated, drooping breasts
- Women after significant weight loss, where excess skin has stretched and loosened
- Women in their 30s, 40s, or older who notice a gradual downward shift in breast position
- Women who feel their breasts have good volume but poor shape and lift
A note on timing that is relevant for patients in Pune specifically: Pune’s warm summers (March to June) and humid monsoon months (June to September) make recovery more demanding in terms of wound care. Keeping incision sites clean and dry requires active attention when humidity is high. If you have flexibility in scheduling, October through February tends to offer a more comfortable recovery environment.
Breast Lift Techniques: Which One Applies to You?
The technique used depends on how much correction is needed:
- Crescent lift for minimal sagging, with a small incision along the upper areola
- Periareolar (donut) lift for moderate sagging, with a circular incision around the areola
- Vertical (lollipop) lift for moderate to significant sagging, adding a vertical incision down from the areola to the breast fold
- Anchor (inverted-T) lift for severe ptosis, which provides the most correction but involves the longest scar pattern
Scars from breast lift surgery are permanent but fade substantially over 12 to 18 months. Patients with South Asian skin types have a somewhat higher risk of hypertrophic or keloidal scarring, which is something I discuss openly at consultation so patients can make informed decisions. For patients with keloid history, we take a conservative approach to technique selection and follow-up scar management.
The average cost of a breast lift at Dr. DC Plastic Surgery Centre ranges from Rs. 1,50,000 to Rs. 2,00,000, depending on technique and complexity. See our treatment pricing page for more detail.
What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases the volume and fullness of the breasts. It does not correct sagging or reposition the nipple. If your breasts sit well on your chest and have reasonable skin tone but feel too small or have lost volume due to weight changes, augmentation is the procedure to discuss.
At Dr. DC Plastic Surgery Centre, breast augmentation is most commonly performed using implants. We also offer breast fat transfer as an alternative for patients who want a modest, natural enhancement without implants. Fat transfer uses liposuction to harvest fat from areas like the abdomen or thighs, which is then processed and transferred to the breast. The volume gain is more subtle than with implants, but many patients prefer avoiding a foreign device.
Implant-Based Augmentation
Breast implants are available in different profiles, projections, and sizes. During consultation, I use standardised measurements and, where relevant, sizers to help patients visualise the likely outcome. The goal is always a result that suits your frame and proportions, not a uniform appearance.
One pattern I see frequently at my clinics across Pune: physically active women in their mid-20s to mid-30s who are fit and have good muscle tone but feel their breast size does not match their overall body proportions. This is a common and entirely valid reason to consider augmentation, and the recovery for these patients tends to be smooth.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Suitable candidates are women who:
- Have naturally small breasts or have lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes
- Have breasts that sit at a reasonable position with good skin elasticity and no significant sagging
- Are at a stable weight, since significant weight changes after surgery affect results
- Have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve and what it cannot

The single most important point in this comparison: augmentation without a lift will not correct drooping. A common mistake is seeking augmentation for a breast that actually needs lifting. When an implant is placed into a breast with significant ptosis and no lift is performed, the implant fills the lower pole but the nipple continues to point downward. This leads to a result that looks unnatural and often requires revision surgery. I raise this at every consultation where I see this mismatch because it saves patients significant time, money, and disappointment.

Can You Have Both Procedures Together?
Yes, and this combined approach is one of the most commonly requested procedures at Dr. DC. A breast lift with augmentation addresses both sagging and volume loss simultaneously, which is particularly relevant for women after pregnancy and breastfeeding, where both concerns almost always coexist.
Combining the two procedures is more surgically complex than either alone and requires careful planning. Recovery is slightly longer, the surgical risk profile is marginally higher, and the consultation process involves more detailed goal-setting. That said, for the right patient, it delivers results that neither procedure could achieve individually.
If you are also looking at restoring the abdomen and other post-pregnancy changes, our mommy makeover programme can address the breasts, abdomen, flanks, and other areas in a coordinated surgical plan.
What the Consultation Looks Like at Dr. DC?
A well-structured consultation is where good surgical outcomes begin. I do not approach consultations as a sales exercise. My approach is to understand what specifically bothers you, assess what your anatomy actually needs, and then be direct about whether those two things align.
Here is what a typical consultation covers:
- History and goals – I ask about medical history, pregnancies, breastfeeding, weight history, and what specifically you want to change.
- Physical assessment – Breast shape, skin elasticity, tissue quality, nipple position, and symmetry are all evaluated.
- Honest procedural guidance – If you come in asking for augmentation but your primary issue is drooping, I will tell you that clearly.
- Planning and sizing – For augmentation, this includes measurements and discussions of implant type, profile, and placement. For lifts, it includes technique selection.
- Recovery and cost discussion – I make sure patients understand the full picture before committing to anything.
We have clinics across Pune at Baner, Prabhat Road, Kharadi, Pimple Saudagar, NIBM, Pune Station, and Karad, making consultations accessible regardless of where you are based.
Recovery: Week by Week
Recovery follows a broadly similar path for both procedures, with some differences based on technique.
Week 1 Rest is essential. Both procedures involve limited arm movement, a surgical support bra, and medication to manage discomfort. Avoid lifting, driving, and strenuous work. Swelling and bruising are normal and expected.
Weeks 2 to 3 Most patients return to desk work or light activity. Swelling begins to reduce. In Pune’s climate, I provide specific incision care instructions based on the season. During warmer or humid months, keeping wounds dry and clean requires more active management than patients might expect.
Weeks 4 to 6 Light activity resumes. The gym and heavy lifting remain off-limits. For augmentation, implants begin to settle into their final position as the overlying tissue relaxes.
3 to 6 Months Final results become visible as residual swelling clears. Breast lift scars, which are more visible in the early months, continue to fade significantly through this period and beyond.
A practical note for Pune patients: many of my patients use public transport or two-wheelers to commute. I advise having private transport arranged for at least 7 to 10 days post-surgery. Reaching overhead handles on a bus or stretching on a scooter can strain healing incisions and soft tissue unnecessarily.
Risks and Realistic Expectations
Both procedures are well-established and safe when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. That said, every elective surgery carries risks that patients should understand clearly before proceeding.
General surgical risks applicable to both procedures include infection, bleeding, anaesthetic reactions, delayed wound healing, and asymmetry.
Breast lift-specific risks include temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation, hypertrophic or keloidal scarring (relevant for patients with a known tendency toward this), and contour irregularities that may require minor revision.
Breast augmentation-specific risks include capsular contracture (where scar tissue forms and hardens around the implant), implant malposition, and the need for implant replacement typically after 10 to 15 years. Implant rupture, while uncommon, is also a long-term consideration.
I discuss all of these at consultation without minimising them. No surgeon can guarantee a perfect outcome, and any clinic that suggests otherwise is not being truthful with you. Results vary between patients based on genetics, skin type, lifestyle, and how well post-operative instructions are followed.
How to Decide Which Procedure Is Right for You?
Here is a practical framework:
- Drooping with good volume and happy with your size – A breast lift is likely the right procedure.
- Small or deflated breasts that sit reasonably well – Breast augmentation is the conversation to have.
- Both drooping and wanting more volume – A combined breast lift and augmentation is probably most appropriate.
- Want natural volume without implants – Breast fat transfer is worth exploring.
The most reliable way to know for certain is a physical consultation. Written descriptions and photographs only go so far. An in-person assessment with proper measurements is necessary for accurate advice.
