Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?
Candidacy is the most honest conversation in cosmetic surgery, because the right answer is sometimes “not yet” or “a different procedure”. This guide covers exactly who qualifies at Dr. DC, who is asked to wait, and when Dr. Dhruv Chavan recommends an alternative instead.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Liposuction?
You are likely a strong candidate if most of the following describe you:
You are near your target weight, and it has been stable for 3 to 6 months
You have specific fat pockets (abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, chin) that persist despite genuine diet and exercise effort
Your skin has reasonable elasticity, so it can contract over the new contour
You are in good general health and fit for anaesthesia
You do not smoke, or are willing to stop 4 weeks before and after surgery
You want better shape and proportion, not a lower number on the scale
What BMI Do I Need for Liposuction?
The ideal range is a BMI of 20 to 30. Patients with a BMI between 30 and 35 are assessed individually, weighing fat distribution, medical fitness and treatment goals. Above that range, weight management delivers more health benefit and a better eventual surgical result than liposuction can, and Dr. Dhruv Chavan will say so directly.
BMI matters because liposuction removes subcutaneous fat, the pinchable layer under the skin. It cannot touch visceral fat, the deeper fat around the organs that drives a protruding abdomen in many higher-BMI patients. No recent weight swing of more than roughly 5 to 10% of body weight in the previous 3 to 6 months is another requirement, because an unstable weight makes any contour temporary.
Is There an Age Limit for Liposuction?
The minimum age is 18, with 21 preferred for purely aesthetic body contouring, assessed case by case on maturity and indication. There is no fixed upper age limit: a fit 58-year-old with good skin can be a better candidate than an unfit 35-year-old. Suitability rests on overall health, anaesthesia fitness, skin quality and expectations rather than the birth certificate.
Is Liposuction a Weight-Loss Procedure?
The best results go to patients who treat liposuction as the finishing tool it is: the procedure removes what diet and exercise cannot, and the patient’s lifestyle protects the result afterwards.
Who Should Not Have Liposuction?
Medical reasons
Surgery is declined or deferred for uncontrolled diabetes, active infection, significant bleeding or clotting disorders, patients on blood-thinning medication that cannot be safely paused, severe heart or lung disease, liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled hypertension, a history of DVT or pulmonary embolism requiring careful assessment, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. Severe obesity is redirected to weight-loss management first.
Psychological reasons
Dr. Dhruv Chavan declines surgery where expectations are unrealistic, where body dysmorphia is suspected, where the motivation comes from pressure by others rather than the patient, where liposuction is being sought as a weight-loss solution, or where a patient cannot realistically comply with post-operative care. A psychological evaluation is requested in selected cases.
Timing reasons
Surgery is postponed after recent significant weight change, before planned major weight loss, before a planned pregnancy, around major exams, travel or life events that would compromise recovery compliance, and after recent major surgery.
When Is a Tummy Tuck Better Than Liposuction?
Liposuction alone works when the problem is fat and the skin can shrink to fit. An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is the better operation when there is significant loose or hanging abdominal skin, post-pregnancy or post-weight-loss skin excess, rectus diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles), a lower abdominal apron, or skin elasticity too poor to contract after fat removal.
In suitable patients the two are combined: the tummy tuck removes loose skin and tightens the abdominal wall while liposuction refines the waist and flanks. If significant laxity only becomes apparent after liposuction, excision procedures are considered from approximately 6 months, once skin contraction has stabilised.
Is Liposuction Different for Men and Women?
The safety principles are identical, but fat distribution, muscle anatomy, skin quality and goals differ. Male cases typically target the abdomen, love handles, chest, lower back and athletic definition, aiming for a firmer, straighter waistline. Female cases more often address the abdomen, waist, flanks, thighs, hips, arms and post-pregnancy changes, aiming for a smoother waist-to-hip transition. The fat-removal pattern is customised to preserve masculine or feminine contour lines rather than applied identically to every body.
Men with enlarged chest tissue should note the distinction between chest fat and glandular tissue: glandular cases are gynecomastia and are treated through the dedicated gynecomastia programme, which combines gland excision with liposuction where needed.
How Do I Prepare for Liposuction Surgery?
Stabilise weight: hold your weight steady for 3 to 6 months; no crash dieting before surgery
Stop smoking and nicotine: at least 4 weeks before and after surgery
Pause risk medications: blood thinners, aspirin, certain NSAIDs, vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo and ginseng, only as advised by the treating physician
Limit alcohol: avoid for 1 week before surgery
Complete tests: routine blood investigations, pre-anaesthesia fitness, ECG when indicated, plus any tests your history requires
Support recovery in advance: hydration, adequate protein, and a plan for garment wear and follow-up attendance
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have liposuction if I am overweight?
A BMI of 30 to 35 is assessed case by case. The honest answer depends on where your fat sits: localised subcutaneous deposits can respond well, while generalised or visceral fat will not.
Who qualifies for HD or 4D liposuction?
HD contouring suits healthy, active patients near target weight with good muscle development and skin elasticity. It is stricter in selection than standard liposuction; see the dedicated HD liposuction page.
Do you treat lipedema?
In selected patients, yes. Lipedema cases are assessed individually at consultation.
Is there a No Cost EMI option?
Yes. 0% EMI through Fibe over 3, 6 or 9 months with zero processing fees and a down payment of 1 to 2 instalments.
Are there any hidden charges?
No. The package inclusions are listed above, and the items outside the package (tests, medications, garments as per MRP, optional massage) are told to you in writing at the consultation.
Does the quote expire?
Quotes are based on your assessment on the day. If your weight or treatment plan changes significantly before surgery, the quote is reviewed at your pre-operative visit.
